A pond for biodiversity

E
Wetlands, which are essential to a large number of species, have been drastically reduced in Switzerland: over 90% of these biotopes have disappeared in 150 years (due to drainage, drying out, canalisation, etc.). This is not without consequences for the inhabitants of these natural environments. 70% of native amphibian species are on the red list. The creation and revitalisation of wetlands and bodies of water is therefore of vital importance in safeguarding amphibians.
In response to this alarming situation, the Park is encouraging the creation of ponds through its Greenways project. Several biotopes have been created, such as on the Colline du Temple in Château-d'OEx and at the Grand Chalet in Rossinière.
The pond on the Colline du Temple was created in September 2021 and measures around 10 m2. The Rossinière pond was created in May 2020 and measures 30m2. Both ponds have been lined with a tarpaulin. This process is necessary to retain water when the soil is not located in a natural wetland.
This biotope provides a new habitat for biodiversity. Three species of amphibian found at higher altitudes appreciate this type of environment: the common toad, the red-legged frog and the alpine newt. They come here in spring to lay their eggs, which develop into juveniles over the course of the summer. In autumn, the amphibians leave the water bodies to seek shelter from the frost, often in wooded areas. A large number of insects, such as dragonflies, can also benefit from ponds.
THERE ARE SEVERAL GOOD WAYS TO BEHAVE ON THIS SITE
- Put your rubbish in the bin;
- Stay around the pond, do not go into it;
- Observe the inhabitants of the pond without touching them;
- Do not put fish in the pond (they are predators of amphibian eggs).
